Late entrants France ousted defending champions and number four seeds USA 2-1 the Hopman Cup in Perth, Australia. France who made it to the season opening mixed tournament when Germany was forced to exit produced a not-so-great performance to send the fourth seeds packing, who put on a rather shabby show. Teenage sensation Tatiana Golovin was expectedly rusty in the first match of the season but she took full advantage of the same rustiness shown by the American. The match far from being picture book perfect produced as many as 75 unforced errors from both players.
The men’s singles also seemed to go in a similar fashion as Mardy Fish lost out in three sets to Jerome Haehnel. Once again the unforced errors ruled the roost with 92 of them on display. And it looked like the French rubbed further salts by pulling out the of the dead mixed doubles rubber as if saying ‘Job done, Bon Nuit’. It was late into to midnight that the tie was scheduled and the French thought the dead rubber wasn’t something that would get them loose their sleep about.
